School’s Out for Summer!
Another school year has come and gone. What an exciting time for many! It’s time for swimming days, sleeping in, spending time with friends, summer camp, and so much more. While this is such an exciting time, this is also a time that can come with unforeseen stress for both the parents and for the children. Let’s look at some things that may be stressful for those involved and steps we can take to assist.
One thing that can get looked over with summer break is the changes in schedule. While children get a break from school, oftentimes the parents do not. This means children’s schedules are completely different while the parents remain the same. This sounds messy right? Super stressful! One thing to assist with this is trying to create a sense of structure and normalcy in the home. This could be small things such as bedtimes and dinner times or larger things such as scheduled activities or camps. This assists with giving everyone a sense of relief and comfort in the unknown of the new season.
Another thing that can be challenging for children is the lack and change in support. This could be their formal support such as teachers or school social workers or informal support such as friends in the school. One thing that is helpful for this is taking steps to assist your children with maintaining relationships. This could be encouraging the exchange of numbers, getting in contact with friends' parents, or even scheduling get togethers. This gives children a sense of comfort, normalcy and social interactions.
Lastly, scheduling intentional quality time with your children. Generally in the school year, children are more “tuned off” once home from school due to being drained all day. Now, they are home all day while the parents are at work. Being intentional to spend quality time with your children assists with maintaining the bond, giving them social interactions, and fostering healthy family relationships.
Summer is here! Let’s take steps to enjoy the sunshine and changes approaching. Try out some of the above tips and ticks and let us know your thoughts. We're hopeful to make this an easier time for all.
